Stereotypical Los Angeles newcomer shots from the top of Runyon Canyon with my Canon EOS 5D.

A wide view of Los Angeles from Runyon Canyon, looking out toward the downtown skyline. The city stretches out in layers of low-rise buildings leading up to the iconic skyscrapers like the Wilshire Grand Center and the U.S. Bank Tower, both standing tall and distinct. Palm trees frame the image in the foreground, while the hazy horizon and faint outlines of distant mountains emphasize the city’s sprawling nature. The clear blue sky adds a bright, open feel to the scene. A closer view of downtown Los Angeles taken from Runyon Canyon. The focus is on the tall, modern skyscrapers, including the U.S. Bank Tower with its rounded top and the Wilshire Grand Center featuring a pointed spire. The density of the urban area is striking, with tightly packed buildings extending toward the horizon. The foreground showcases a more subdued landscape of smaller residential and commercial buildings. A dog walks along the dusty trail of Runyon Canyon, surrounded by loose dirt, scattered rocks, and patches of dried vegetation. The dog has a sturdy build, with light gray fur on its body and darker accents on its face and ears, creating a wolf-like appearance. Its tail is fluffy as it moves confidently on the uneven terrain. Behind the dog, part of the trail infrastructure is visible, including a concrete platform and a green trash bin. A wide shot from Runyon Canyon looking out over the vast expanse of Los Angeles. The middle ground reveals densely packed neighborhoods and tree-lined streets, with a mix of white apartment buildings and smaller houses. The background stretches endlessly, showing layers of development fading into the hazy horizon, creating a sense of depth and the enormity of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Standing on a dirt trail at Runyon Canyon, I look back over the cityscape of Los Angeles. My silhouette is framed neatly against the expansive view, with the foreground capturing the rugged trail and canyon vegetation. I wear a red sleeveless shirt and shorts. Behind me, the city stretches out endlessly, fading into a soft, atmospheric haze at the horizon, with iconic Los Angeles landmarks faintly visible in the distance.

The view from Runyon Canyon overlooking Los Angeles, with a wide expanse of the city stretching out in every direction. The foreground features the rugged hillside trail, while the middle ground includes dense residential neighborhoods with white buildings and tree-lined streets. The background appears to show a faint outline of Catalina Island or possibly a southern mountain range, sitting under a slightly hazy sky that softens the horizon. A zoomed-in view from Runyon Canyon focusing on Los Angeles, with the city skyline in the middle ground. Closer to the horizon, the distant landmass might be Catalina Island or another southern California mountain range, highlighted by a layer of atmospheric haze. The foreground is absent of significant details, allowing the focus to remain on the contrast between urban density and distant natural landscapes. A downward-looking shot from Runyon Canyon that contrasts the dry canyon trail and vegetation with the sprawling city below. The valley showcases tightly packed neighborhoods, including white apartment buildings, small houses, and tree-lined streets. The winding trail cuts through the hillside, with scattered walkers visible along its path. Palm trees and other greenery stand out against the muted urban backdrop. A classic downtown Los Angeles view taken from Runyon Canyon. Prominent skyscrapers, including the U.S. Bank Tower and Wilshire Grand Center, dominate the scene. The city stretches out in a dense, grid-like fashion, showcasing a mix of industrial, commercial, and residential areas. The atmosphere adds a slight haze to the horizon, softening the edges of the skyline and creating a layered effect. A darker, nearly silhouetted hillside view from Runyon Canyon with one or two people faintly visible at the edge of the trail. The hazy atmosphere of the Los Angeles basin fills the background, blending into the brightness of the late afternoon sky. The photo highlights the natural contours of the hill against the expansive urban sprawl, softened by the distant glow of sunlight.A striking sunset captured from Runyon Canyon, with a silhouetted hillside rising diagonally across the frame. A single human figure stands near the top of the hill, outlined against the radiant orange glow of the setting sun. The bushes and rugged landscape in the foreground contrast sharply with the bright, almost blinding sunlight that envelops the sky.

Not bad for a few quick and casual shots, right? I had only been here for a month, so while Runyon is a pretty typical destination, it was new to me, and boy was it nice. And thanks to Katie for the one shot of me that I really like looking back over it.

I actually have a lot more to say about Runyon that I wrote in a blog post on the main part of my site: Hiking Runyon Canyon Park Trail: Snakes, Sights, & Secret Ruins. (You may also be interested in The Secret Shrine of Wattles Garden Park Trail.)
