Going Nowhere: Spring 2013

Ukrainian Village: April 2013
Discarded: May 2013

At the end of April 2013, I packed up my belongings and moved out. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a home to move into. 35mm film, late April through May of 2013.

A striking image with most of the frame overtaken by an end-of-the-roll light leak in vivid shades of white, yellow, and orange. On the far right, Lauren is perfectly framed by the bright colors. She stands in a casual yet alluring pose, wearing a pink tank top and blue shorts. Her split-dyed hair is as vibrant as ever, and her hands are held over her face in a playful or surprised gesture. The background features an old-fashioned wood-paneled home interior, complete with visible doorframes and classic warm-toned trim, suggesting a vintage Chicago house.

Callie, a sleek black cat with shiny fur, lies sprawled atop a natural wood shelf. Her bright green eyes gaze intently at the camera, exuding curiosity and feline elegance. The background highlights the house’s classic interior details, including dark wood molding and light-colored walls. The shelf’s smooth, pale wood contrasts beautifully with Callie’s dark coat.

A view from inside a second-story Ukrainian Village apartment through large windows framed with dark wood. Outside, leafless trees and the muted façade of another apartment building suggest a chilly or early spring day. Inside, the clutter of moving is evident, with a tufted couch partially visible, a foam mannequin head on the right, and various packing boxes scattered throughout the room. A globe-like lamp on the left adds a touch of charm to the otherwise chaotic scene.

Alex, wearing glasses and a tank top, stands alongside Stanislav, who sports a Loyola University Chicago t-shirt. Both are in mid-action as they help move furniture. Alex is holding up a large, padded piece of furniture wrapped in protective material. The bright, diffused lighting creates soft shadows, and the background shows plain walls with hints of architectural wood trim typical of Chicago homes.

A lively and chaotic scene inside the house, where Brandon flashes two peace signs from the back of the room, wearing a casual shirt and grinning. Lauren is visible closer to the camera but slightly blurred, her split-dyed hair still discernible. The space is filled with plastic totes, wooden built-ins, and various household items scattered about. A vent and pipe on the wall add to the raw and lived-in feel of the room.

Another serene view from a window, this time more focused on the surroundings outside. The classic wooden window frame provides a glimpse of a neighboring building with muted beige siding. Tree branches with sparse leaves add texture to the urban landscape, while soft natural light floods the room, reflecting off the glass. A tricky shot featuring a partially open door leading out from a bedroom. The doorframe on the right divides the image, with the left side revealing the interior of the room and a window that looks out onto the neighborhood and trees. The soft blue lighting and classic wood details evoke a sense of calm within the slight disarray of the moving process.

Lauren stands near an empty white pantry in a softly lit room, her split-dyed hair in shades of blonde and dark brown framing her face. She wears glasses and a sleeveless white shirt with a small dotted pattern, her eyes closed in a serene expression. Behind her, a metal pipe runs vertically along the wall.

In this nearly identical shot, Lauren’s expression changes as she smiles warmly, her eyes open and engaging with the camera. The subtle glow of the lighting highlights her features and the same background elements—the pantry, pipe, and doorframe—remain visible, keeping the focus on her energy.

A kitchen scene, with a refrigerator prominently in the left foreground. Next to it stands Alex, wearing his white graphic tank top. The background features large windows framed by warm wood trim, allowing faint outdoor light to filter in. The scene is casual and unposed, capturing a candid moment of the moving night.

Ethan (me!), captured in a warmly lit kitchen with a slightly grainy texture that adds to the film-like aesthetic. I stand in front of a white refrigerator, dressed in a tan button-up shirt with rolled-up sleeves. The soft indoor lighting casts a gentle glow on my face. Behind me, large windows with dark trim show the reflection of the indoor light against the dark nighttime windows.

Outdoors in Rogers Park, Rebecca smiles brightly in the sunlight. She has long, light brown hair, slightly damp, and wears glasses with a confident expression. Her black cardigan and coral top complement the greenery and brick architecture behind her, the mid-day light casting soft shadows on the textured surroundings.

Erin leans against the reflective surface of Cloud Gate, also known as The Bean, in Millennium Park. Her vivid red hair falls to her shoulders, paired with striking dark brows and a spiky black choker. The reflection of her profile mirrors her pose against the sleek, polished metal.

A tiny, white baby sandal with floral cutouts rests delicately atop a weathered wooden post. The pastel pink lining of the sandal contrasts with the rough texture of the wood. The background fades into a gentle blur of blue hues.

Victoria and Scott hug warmly in the back of a cozy coffee shop. Victoria, with a red bandana and glasses, beams with happiness, while Scott, in a checkered shirt and apron, smiles contentedly. The softly lit scene features coffee racks, pastry shelves, and warm wooden details, creating an inviting, bustling atmosphere.

In a freshly painted apartment in Rogers Park, Anna stands mock-presenting the space with outstretched hands. She wears a vibrant floral sundress, her short hair styled neatly. The walls are a white but appear pale yellow due to the 35mm film and lighting, and the room contains simple elements like blinds, a ladder, and a drop cloth on the floor, suggesting recent renovations.
