Utter Mayhem: Spring 2010

Visual Design (Roll 2): Fall 2009
An Afternoon (Roll 1): May 2010

College, right? Timeframe on these varies substantially through the 5.5 semesters of class I took between the fall of 2008 and the spring of 2010. Shot on a Canon PowerShot digital camera.

A group of students in a dimly lit film classroom, blurred in motion. The image features a chaotic scene with people moving around a table cluttered with filmmaking equipment, including lights and a camera tripod. The motion blur adds to the sense of activity at a Columbia College Chicago classroom.

A rooftop view of an enclosed Chicago courtyard with a covered swimming pool. The pool is surrounded by fencing and landscaping, with beige and red-brick apartment buildings in the background. The scene is bathed in soft afternoon light. A close-up of streaks of light forming abstract patterns. The image shows red and white light trails captured with intentional camera movement, creating a dynamic, surreal visual effect. A cluster of filmstrips hanging in vertical rows. The image focuses on the texture and shine of the filmstrips, emphasizing the intricate perforations and blue-tinted reflections, set against a blurred background. A caution sticker with a stylized cartoon of a train. The illustration shows a train with menacing eyes and sharp teeth, alongside figures crossing train tracks. The edges of the sticker are worn and peeling, adding character to the image.

Me and Tim relaxing in a living room filled with dorm-style furnishings. I'm lying on a couch with a checkered oven mitt covering my face, while Tim sits nearby holding a light meter in front of me. I'm acting in a film, playing a hungover frat bro. A table in the foreground holds scattered party cups and cards.

A student wearing a tinfoil hat grinning in front of a conspiracy theory board. The board is covered with images, labels, and red string connecting various points, creating a chaotic, humorous depiction of a mock investigation.

A student performing in front of a film camera under colorful lighting. The subject is mid-motion, leaning forward dramatically with blurred limbs, while a second person operates the camera, an antique 16mm Bolex. The lighting creates dramatic shadows on the wall in reds and blues.

A young woman in a white dress and pale ghoulish makeup posing against a brick wall. The backdrop includes exposed pipes and a vintage industrial aesthetic. The subject's wide-eyed expression and raised hands add a playful, theatrical quality to the image. She's a demon!

A young woman kneels on the floor behind my couch in my dorm apartment, arranging miniature trees and buildings on a diorama with a hand-drawn forest backdrop taped to a couch. A blue stream and patches of green represent water and grass, surrounded by small plants.

Close-up of hands holding a small green dinosaur figurine and a small black bear figurine in front of a Bolex film camera. The setup includes a bright desk lamp with a flexible arm for lighting, and a blurred red building visible through the window in the background.

A couple bronze dinosaur statues are in sharp focus in the foreground, with the iconic Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) rising in the misty Chicago skyline behind it. The cloudy sky adds a dramatic tone to the scene.

A woman wearing a light pink shirt and jeans holds a camera while exploring an industrial setting (urbex). The room features large metal pipes wrapped in insulation, concrete walls, and a dusty floor scattered with debris.

A makeshift mushroom fort made from floral-patterned sheets hangs across the corner of a dimly lit room. Strung-up Christmas lights in warm red, green, and yellow illuminate the space, casting soft glows on posters and furniture.

A crowded house party with people in costumes. A man dressed as Abraham Lincoln leans against a counter with a cup in hand, surrounded by other partygoers, including someone dancing under warm string lights. A dimly lit above-garage house party room where a kaleidoscopic video projection displays intricate patterns on a wall above a crowded group of partygoers. The dark silhouettes of attendees blend into the vibrant light display. A close-up view of the same crowded party scene as before, with attendees' faces more visible as they watch the colorful kaleidoscopic projection. The background includes warm yellow lighting from a window. A basement bar with a vivid red light illuminating a small group of people. Shadows and silhouettes dominate the room, giving it a mysterious, moody atmosphere, enhanced by the red glow. A dance floor scene lit with cool blue light from a video projection of textured patterns. Silhouetted attendees mingle, with the projection casting a vibrant, surreal glow across the space. A crowded basement party scene filled with people talking and mingling under dim lighting. The hazy air and soft shadows give the room an atmospheric vibe, with glowing windows adding warm contrast in the background. A group of partygoers inside a concrete-walled basement, illuminated by soft, diffused light. Several people stand and chat while others sit against the walls, wearing outfits ranging from casual to vintage-inspired styles, definitely 2010 styled fashion. A large ballroom filled with attendees under a dramatic red and orange lighting scheme. Chandeliers sparkle above, and a projection screen on the far wall displays the words “Paint It Black” as the crowd moves and mingles. It's Columbia College Chicago's pre-graduation party. A white plastic trash can filled with empty brown glass beer bottles. The bottles are piled at various angles, reflecting ambient light from a nearby window, suggesting the aftermath of a crazy college party, the end, and the next morning's sunlight.

Thanks for reliving the chaos my college life with me. What a wild time I had at Columbia! I still miss Chicago all the time, and these sure were wonderful memories. Utter mayhem is right.

Film school got me into all sorts of weird situations, from dinosaur-bear miniature adult stop motion projects to insane private house parties held over abandoned garages. I did a bunch of stuff with conspiracy theories, demons, frat party hangovers, mushrooms, Halloween costumes, and probably a lot more that I don’t remember anymore. I assume I went to class at some point too.
