Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a really great movie that I’m sure you saw too, and a million fanboy words have already been written on it so I’ll make this somewhat quick. I will not hide spoilers so if you haven’t seen it and don’t want it ruined, get out now.

I loved it.

I didn’t like Finn’s background. He’s a stormtrooper for the first time? But it’s his first time in the field? But he’s a strong young man who had no reason to be on garbage duty or whatever? And soon he’s asking Rey if she has a boyfriend? How does he know what that stuff means? Are all stormtroopers just like, in high school, with personal lives? Should we feel sorry for them now? How come he’s literally the only one who ever felt bad and turned? Etc etc etc. None of that really made sense.

Didn’t like how the story was so similar. I mean, it was just basically another Death Star. A jumbo Death Star that was a little harder to blow up, but like, yeah. I hope that’s the last we see of this plot.

I liked the new characters. I loved Rey. Rey is my favorite. She is the best. I didn’t think she was overpowered at all – in fact I love how strong she’s getting immediately with the Force along with her preexisting skills with close combat weapons.

I loved Kylo Ren. I liked how they knew it would be impossible to follow Darth Vader with another similar big bad villain, so instead, they made a villain who was also concerned himself with following Darth Vader. It fit. And he was perfect the whole way through, too.

Really loved Daniel Craig’s cameo.

I think it’s pretty fitting that Han died, but it was still so incredibly sad. But he was kinda supposed to die in Return of the Jedi anyway so it comes together.

I liked how Finn tried the lightsaber at first and just got beat down.

Didn’t like the whole map puzzle piece thing. Like come on does no one else have a map of the galaxy? Come on, please.

I was really into Snoke. I hope he really is giant but it could go either way, still though it’s cool to have a new mysterious villain and I hope he really is new and not just some other old character revived.

Shame we didn’t get to see the bones of Jar Jar Binks laying in the background somewhere.

I’m both happy and sad that it’s different than the expanded universe of old. It’s great that it’s all nice and fresh. But I will definitely miss parts of the old expanded universe. Grand Admiral Thrawn, Joruus C’boath, Mara Jade, Jacen & Jaina, the new Jedi academy, Luke’s hunt for his maternal line… not to mention the galactic invasion later on. There’s so much good stuff there, but I also realize it would be impossible to cram it all into movies and most people would be let down just seeing adaptations of existing old novels. I guess I would be too. Oh well.

Anyway. Can’t wait for the next one!
